It’s Palin Day on Political Machine.
Sarah Palin to Pay Back Taxes on ‘Travel’ Expenses
As I reported back in September, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin collected almost $17,000.00 in per diem travel
expenses for 312 days spent in her Wasilla home. Now, according to state officials, it’s time to pay the piper. From ADN.com:
Gov. Sarah Palin must pay income taxes on thousands of dollars in expense money she received while living at her Wasilla home, under a new determination by state officials.
The governor’s office wouldn’t say this week how much she owes in back taxes for meal money, or whether she intends to continue to receive the per diem allowance. As of December, she was still charging the state for meals and incidentals.
“The amount of taxes owed is a private matter,” Sharon Leighow, Palin’s spokeswoman, said in an e-mail. “If the governor collects future per diem, those documents would be a matter of public record.”
Does this mean Palin is up for a job in the Obama administration? Maybe Commerce Secretary?
It seems to me that, if the taxability of the per diem is in question, perhaps the per diem itself ought to be, as well. If the money is taxable because it wasn’t actually for travel on state business, why are these expenses eligible at all?
Removed from the presidential campaign, this doesn’t seem all that significant. If Palin is to be the GOP’s candidate for President in 2012, I had better hope this story gains little traction. Look away! Look away!!
