Michael Steele Responds to WaPo: ‘Post Ought to be Ashamed of Itself’
As I reported yesterday, The Washington Post published allegations of financial malfeasance against new RNC Chair Michael Steele’s 2006 Senate campaign. Steele responded today, telling This Week’s George Stephanopoulos it was pure bunk:
Steele didn’t equivocate much here, whereas the Post story was full of phrases like “It is unclear how extensively (the) claims have been pursued.” Only time will tell, but it appears that the Post may have been overreaching here.

On the other hand, there are parts of Steele’s story that don’t add up. He says he provided the Post with receipts, but the Post story says they were for the wrong dates and amounts. Steele also admits he doesn’t know what the status of his sister’s company was at the time of the payment.
This story is still developing, and Steele is entitled to a presumption of innocence, but by the same token, the Washington Post’s reporting looks pretty solid.
What’s really out of place here is the US attorney’s office accidentally sending the Post a sealed document. Was it really accidental, or were they trying to accomplish something with that leak?
